Figures and facts about ESS

Figures and facts about European Spallation Source (ESS)

What is ESS (the short version)

  • European Spallation Source (ESS) is a multi-disciplinary research facility based on the world’s most powerful neutron source
  • ESS is designed to generate neutron beams for science.

Financing

  • The construction cost are EUR 1,843 billion (almost DKK 14 billion)
  • Approximately half of the construction costs are covered by Sweden and Denmark. The remaining costs are covered by the 15 partner countries.

ESS Governance

Climate facts about ESS

  • ESS is the world’s first climate-neutral research facility
  • The chosen energy solution will reduce the annual CO2 emissions with 165,000 tonnes compared to a conventional energy solution
  • The waste heat will be recycled in the district-heating system in Lund and heat up the equivalent of about 10,000 detached houses.

Dimension and volume

  • Total length of the facility: 650 metres (hereof 500 metres will be under ground)
  • The size of the three experimental halls corresponds to the size of three football fields
  • Total area: 65,000 m2
  • Total volume: 400,000 m3
  • Construction of the facility involves 50,000 m3 of concrete, 6,000 tonnes rebar, 40 kilometres of pipes for distribution of cooling, air, etc., 2,000 kilometres of cables
